The City of Albuquerque has posted the proposed plans for the West Central Complete Streets Project following last Wednesday's public open house. The project focuses on West Central Avenue between Sarracino Place and 98th Street and includes significant safety improvements for people walking, biking, and using transit.
Current designs include shared-use sidepaths, a NACTO-style protected intersection at 98th Street and Central Avenue, floating bus stops that route the bikeway behind the bus boarding area to reduce conflicts between buses and people biking, leading pedestrian intervals that give pedestrians a head start before turning traffic receives a green light, and truck aprons that allow large vehicles to navigate intersections while keeping corner radii tighter to improve pedestrian safety.
Even if you don't have specific feedback about the design, this is an excellent opportunity to let the City know that you appreciate investments like this. Albuquerque remains one of the most dangerous cities in the country for people walking and bicycling, and projects that prioritize safety are badly needed. Positive feedback helps demonstrate public support for Complete Streets projects and sends the message that our community wants to see many more improvements like this across Albuquerque.
