The Albuquerque cycling community is mourning the loss of Robert Montoya, who was killed in a hit-and-run crash last Monday morning in Northeast Albuquerque. According to Albuquerque Police, Montoya was struck by a vehicle at an intersection along Carlisle Boulevard, and the driver fled the scene. He later died from his injuries.
The incident has intensified ongoing concerns about roadway safety in the city, particularly for people walking and biking on high-speed corridors. Advocates are once again urging faster action on Vision Zero goals, including infrastructure improvements and policies aimed at reducing serious and fatal crashes.
Montoya’s death adds to a growing number of traffic-related fatalities in Albuquerque this year and has renewed calls from community members for stronger enforcement and design changes that prioritize vulnerable road users.
A suspect has been arrested and remains in custody.
