Two life-saving traffic safety bills are moving forward — and BikeABQ members can help ensure they’re heard this session.

Help Move Life-Saving Traffic Safety Bills Forward

January 26, 2026 at 11:54:50 PM

Two important traffic safety bills — SB 73 (Driver’s Ed Requirements) and SB 91 (Traffic Violation Penalties) — have been prefiled in the New Mexico Legislature and could make our streets safer for everyone who walks, bikes, and drives.

Because these bills are not budget bills, they require a Governor’s message in order to be scheduled for a committee hearing during the 30-day session. Issuing that message is the next critical step in moving these bills forward.

SB 73 would require New Mexico driver education to include training on safely interacting with vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists.

SB 91 would allow cities to retain revenue from automated speed enforcement and reinvest it directly into street safety improvements.

BikeABQ is asking members to take a few minutes to contact the Governor’s office and urge her to issue a Governor’s message for both bills. Hearing from constituents helps demonstrate broad public support and can influence whether these bills advance this session.

Take action:
Call the Governor’s office at 505-476-2200 or submit a message via the Governor’s web form.

You can keep your message short — simply ask the Governor to issue a message allowing SB 73 and SB 91 to be heard in committee.

Your voice matters — and a small action now can help move life-saving legislation forward.
