The Albuquerque City Council unanimously passed O-26-55 last week, a measure that will make it easier for the City to incorporate quick-build safety improvements when streets are repaved or restriped.
Quick-build projects use relatively simple, lower-cost materials and designs to address safety concerns without waiting for a major reconstruction project. Improvements can include painted treatments, bollards, safer crossings, pedestrian refuge areas, protected bike lanes, and changes that slow dangerous turning movements.
By considering these types of improvements as part of routine street work, Albuquerque can make meaningful safety upgrades more quickly and at a lower cost. These changes can benefit people walking, biking, rolling, taking transit, and driving.
