BikeABQ recently submitted a letter of strong support for the Revitalize San Pedro Partnership (RSPP) in its application to AARP’s Great Community Change Grant program.
RSPP is working to transform the San Pedro corridor from Central north to I-40 into a safer, more welcoming, and economically vibrant district. Their current grant proposal would fund the purchase and installation of up to 30 new bike racks in front of local businesses between Lomas and I-40 — a simple but powerful improvement that will make it easier for people of all ages to ride to shops, restaurants, parks, and services.
But the bike racks are just one piece of a much larger effort.
RSPP is beginning a full streetscape redesign, starting with the west side of San Pedro between Lomas and I-40. Improvements include rebuilding sidewalks, eliminating excess curb cuts, and adding real physical protection to the existing bike lanes once striping is complete. Future phases will extend these upgrades to both sides of the corridor and south to Central.
There are also exciting longer-term plans to significantly improve safety at the intersection of Central and San Pedro — a critical connection that will complement the corridor work and make conditions safer for pedestrians and people on bikes alike.
Safe and convenient bicycle parking is essential infrastructure. Without it, even the best bike lanes fall short. These racks will support healthier transportation choices, increase access to local businesses, and enhance independence for both older adults and youth — especially as e-bikes make cycling more accessible to more people.
We’re proud to stand alongside RSPP as allies in building safer streets and stronger neighborhoods. The momentum along San Pedro is real — and we’re excited to see it continue.
