BikeABQ is saddened by the death of bicyclist Maykel Garcia, who was killed on the morning of Saturday, June 20, after being struck by a driver at the intersection of Central Avenue and Maple Street.
According to court documents, witnesses told investigators they heard the vehicle accelerate before the collision. Police have charged the driver, Brent Curley, with vehicular homicide, along with violations of open container laws, unsafe passing on the left side, and failure to yield the right-of-way.
This tragedy comes amid growing concerns about increasingly aggressive and dangerous driving behavior on Albuquerque's streets. Every person who walks, bikes, rolls, or drives deserves to arrive home safely, and no one should lose their life simply because they chose to travel by bicycle.
Our thoughts are with Maykel's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. BikeABQ will continue advocating for safer streets, stronger accountability for dangerous driving, and transportation infrastructure that protects everyone who uses our roadways.
