Thank you for coming to ABQ CiQlovia!
ABQ CiQlovia, which took place on September 20, was a huge success. Hundreds if not thousands of people took to historic 4th Street to walk, ride, play, paint, skate, yoga and so much more! The route this year, which connected the Railyards Market to Civic Plaza, received rave reviews. Thanks to 24 Hours of Art, Civic Plaza was filled with wonderful music and art exhibits throughout the day. Mayor Berry joined us on the plaza in the afternoon to say some kind words about ABQ CiQlovia and 24 Hours of Art.
Our connection with the Railyards Market was extremely successful. Their bike valet was full to capacity the entire day. Mini solar car races took place on Stover while a buffered, protected bike lane was added to 4th between Coal and Iron. Many people commented on the strong presence of children and families, a beautiful sight to see.
Everyone from BikeABQ and ABQ CiQlovia extends our gratitude to everyone who volunteered to help with the event. These events are only successful when we all show up and fill the streets so thank you for coming!
BikeABQ focuses on encouraging more people to ride bicycles through better policy. This past year these actions included speaking up in support of the Complete Streets legislation, managing bike valets across town, helping to get more people on bikes via Bike Swap, and organizing community meetings around a community survey to gain feedback about what direction it should take as an organization. Many suggestions were made, including increased support for ABQ CiQlovia.
Last year, BikeABQ contributed towards making the inaugural ABQ CiQlovia a reality. This year, we stepped up and become the title sponsor for the event. This marks an exciting opportunity for both BikeABQ and ABQ CiQlovia. Read on below to learn more about ABQ CiQlovia and what you can expect from this amazing event.
|ABQ CiQlovía returns for another day of walking, riding and playing in car free streets!|
ABQ CiQlovía returns on Sunday, September 20, from 10am-3pm, with one mile of car free streets. ABQ CiQlovía is a fun, safe opportunity to leave your car behind and walk, ride, play, exercise and reimagine our largest public space – streets! Live music, food trucks, on-street yoga, art and a bike rodeo will be available throughout the day during this event.
ABQ CiQlovía is the Albuquerque version of the global phenomenon known as “ciclovia” or “open streets.” These events, which happen in cities around the world, enable citizens and visitors to experience streets without automobiles. ABQ CiQlovía allows people to freely walk, bike, exercise, shop, eat, and relax in a beautiful and historic part of Albuquerque. Last year over 4,700 people experienced ABQ CiQlovía’s inaugural event and this year’s event is anticipated to attract even more people.
BikeABQ is this year’s title sponsor. Also, the event is partnering with 24 Hours of Art, DowntownABQ MainStreet Initiative, the City of Albuquerque and several other organizations to host an even more exciting event! The lively Rail Yards Market at Albuquerque’s historic railyards and 24 Hours of Art and placemaking at Civic Plaza will anchor ABQ CiQlovía. They will be connected via historic 4th street, which was once home to Route 66 and follows El Camino Real.
ABQ CiQlovía is focused around safe family fun and outdoor recreation, highlighting local businesses and providing an opportunity for people to experience temporary bicycle/pedestrian demonstration projects. Demonstration projects at this year’s event include protected bike lanes, crosswalks and traffic calming murals painted onto the streets. Short-term demonstration projects like these are affordable strategies that allow us to test before investing in permanent infrastructure in our cities and towns.
