BikeABQ Inaugural CYCLE TO BALLOON FIESTA Ride
Sunday, October 4, 2015 5:00 AM start
Last year, at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta weekend events, the automobile traffic was so heavy that I-25 became a parking lot. Thousands of people gave up or were turned away. As bicycle advocates, we all know that arriving at the Balloon Fiesta by bicycle is a fun, rewarding, safe, and eminently practical alternative to car traffic. Without a doubt, arriving by bicycle at our Balloon Fiesta Wonderland makes one much more of an active participant in the entire spectacle.
As advocates for bicycles, we can advertise the following:
By bicycling to the Fiesta, you will not contribute to traffic congestion nor will you pollute our air. You will have accomplished a physical task of which you can be justifiably proud and the entire family including grandparents can participate.
Because BikeABQ and others are providing free bike valet service and because the City of Albuquerque has built the superbly engineered Diversion Channel Bike Path directly to the Balloon Fiesta Park, the infrastructure exists to accommodate bicyclists of all ages and abilities.
Therefore, BikeABQ is sponsoring a CYCLE TO BALLOON FIESTA Ride this year.
BikeABQ members Dusty and Gay Blech will be leading the ride from UNM Parking Lot Q on University near KNME along the Diversion Channel Bike Path north to the Bike Valet at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Park leaving at 5:00 AM. Participants who transport their bikes here with their cars, will not, for the most part, be adding to the auto traffic headed for the fiesta.
The ride will take about one hour and is 8 miles long. For riders who need a shorter option, a midpoint meeting place to join the group will be where the Diversion Channel Bike Path crosses Singer Blvd., near the intersection of Singer and Chappell. Meet the group there at 5:30 AM. At the end of the ride, bicycles are parked free and protected at the Balloon Fiesta Bike Valet.
All participants must have head and taillights, helmets, and water. BikeABQ volunteers will be needed to help stop traffic (which should be minimal at 5:15 AM) on Indian School Road and to act as caboose riders to trouble shoot and help move the group along.
Please join us and bring your family and friends. This will be great fun for us, and a grand adventure, especially for the young participants.
Free Bike Valet at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta will be available October 3 through October 11. Morning Sessions are 5:30am – 10:30am and Evening sessions are 5:00pm – 9:00pm.
This Bike Valet is provided by the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta with Volunteers from various organizations including BikeABQ.
