Who We Are:
BikeABQ is a nonprofit organization with over 145 members that engages cyclists through advocacy, education and outreach throughout the city.
Since our founding in 1999, BikeABQ has been working with public officials and government staff to communicate the concerns of bicyclists. We engage in education programs and promote infrastructure improvements that make bicycle riding a safe alternative for daily transportation.
You’ve seen the effect of our advocacy in each of our towns: bike lane striping, bike route and share-the-road signs, permanent bike racks . . . plus Street Skills classes, Safe Routes to Schools programs, Bike-to-Work-Month programs, Bike Valets, BikeSwaps, and more.
BikeABQ brings together the diverse bicycling community in a united mission to improve the bicycling environment and quality of life for the entire city.
The mission of BikeABQ is to increase the number of bicyclists in Albuquerque for transportation, health, and recreation. We provide education, advocate for the rights of cyclists, and work to create and preserve safe biking environments. The current advocacy work of BikeABQ follows the League of American Bicyclists “5 E’s” (Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, Engineering, and Evaluation & Planning) as well as our dedication to the Environment and Health.
- Education & Encouragement – Provide better education to both motorists and cyclists through our Share the Road campaign, our bike resource guides, and safety workshops. Increase the number of cyclists as a mode of transportation by offering and partnering in city-wide events such as Bike to Work Day, offering Bike Valet services at Albuquerque events, and orchestrating the ABQ Bike Swap, Albuquerque’s largest used bicycle sales event.
- Enforcement & Engineering – Working to ensure that cyclists have complete and direct access to all area paths and transit systems by participating in city and regional planning and advisory committees. Working with government agencies to ensure that all transportation policies and projects provide safe and convenient access for all bicyclists and pedestrians.
- Evaluations & Planning – Advocate for improved bicycle infrastructure and supporting laws through city policies, better bicycle master plans, and increased municipal funding for bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. We aim to increase bikes as a mode of transportation in Albuquerque by working with the city on better bicycle and transit integration, to increase the amount of funding for bicycle infrastructure, setting goals and better policies, and conducting bicycle and pedestrian counts in collaboration with cities and local advocacy chapters.
- Environment & Health – Working with public agencies, advocacy groups, and other parties to promote non-motorized modes of transportation to improve air quality and Promote bicycling as a fun, safe, economical, environmentally sound, and healthy form of transportation for the residents of Albuquerque.
BikeABQ’s vision is to increase bicycle infrastructure throughout the city of Albuquerque, to become a national model for progressive bicycling policies, and to become a top 20 League of American Bicyclists “Bicycle-Friendly” state by 2015 (currently #45 of 50).
