Results of Survey & Planning Session

We surveyed our membership and other Albuquerque-area cyclists to set priorities for bicycle advocacy for the next few years. Our top six emerged as:

1) Infrastructure Advocacy
2) Policy Advocacy
3) Safe Routes to School
4) Working with APD & the City on cycling
5) Develop bicycle public service announcements
6) Bike-Friendly Business Program

On Saturday August 16th, BikeABQ had a strategic planning session for its board and members. At the meeting, teams developed work plans for infrastructure advocacy, working with APD & the city, and a bike-friendly business program. We will work on the other priorities as man-hours allow.

We will continue our other work, including holding Road I and mechanics classes, encouragement events, advising the local governments, and providing action alerts.

Support "Kerry's Law"

Kerry Lujan, 19, the daughter of BikeABQ member, Judy Lujan was killed by a hit and run driver in Colorado in late May.  Kerry was on foot at the time.  Kerry was hit twice by two different drivers that fled the scene.  The first driver to hit Kerry turned himself in due to intense media coverage 10 hours after her death.  There is no way of knowing his blood alcohol level was at the time he hit Kerry, so he will not be charged with DUI.  Therefore, he is in less trouble for leaving Kerry on the road than he would have been if he were intoxicated and stopped to help her.  Judy is asking support for a “Kerry’s Law” that would reverse this situation.

Please contact Julie Lujan to get involved in creating "Kerry's Law."

The memorial ride was held July 13, 2008. It was approximately 5 miles long and incorporated the Paseo del Bosque Trail and a few ditch banks in the area with dirt surfaces.

When:

Sunday July 13, 2008, 5:30pm

Where (Click for maps):

Starts at the Paseo Del Bosque Alameda Trail Head

NEW! Southeast New Mexico Cycling Org

A message from the director of the new cycling organization in NM:

Southeast New Mexico Cycling was recently organized to support cycling. We already have about 70 participating cyclists and are growing fast. We intend to offer clinics on cycling and bicycle repair/maintenance, support regular rides, and offer postings on our website (www.senmcycling.com) for regional cycling events. Cycling activity is growing fast in this part of the state and our group seeks to support cycling in every way possible. Within our group, we have established competitive cyclists and people new to the sport. Consequently, we are offering rides for all levels of interest and ability. We’ve already sponsored several rides between Carlsbad and Hobbs and have developed teams to participate in numerous cycling events in New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona. Cyclists traveling through or to the Hobbs area should contact us about the possibility of joining in on one or more of our rides. We’ve had people from Europe and several other states join our rides. We’ve even arranged special rides for out of town guests. We look forward to joining with groups such as yours in advancing cycling related issues.

The Kym Samuels Bike Safety Fund

On February 10, 2007 a pick-up truck ran a red light at the intersection of Lomas and Yale striking a cyclist.  The cyclist, Kym Samuels, was incredibly lucky.  Although she was hospitalized, her helmet stayed intact and saved her from any head injuries.

Kym has asked that in lieu of flowers, people donate money to BikeABQ to help prevent accidents like this from happening in the future. BikeABQ has created the Kym Samuels Bike Safety Fund, which will be used for motorist education programs. Kym's sister, Lisa Moore, has set up a system through Network for Good and Six Degrees to facilitate the donation process. Use the buttons to the right to make a donation.

Alternately, you may mail a check made out to BikeABQ to our address listed below, with "Kym Samuels Bike Safety Fund" on the endorsement line:

BikeABQ
PO Box 4119
Albuquerque, NM 87196-4119

Our thoughts are with Kym, her family, and her boyfriend Ryan. We wish her the speediest recovery and we thank you in advance for your donation.
Any donation of $25 or more will also grant you a one-year membership to BikeABQ.
